How do you tell the difference between yellow meated and red-meated watermelons?
I'm curious to know how one could tell by appearance alone the difference between a yellow-meated watermelon and a red-meated one. That is to say I don't mean store bought watermelons. I live in a rural area and many people grow them. Is there any indication in the pattern on the rind to what kind of meat the watermelon has?
Yellow Meated (fleshed)
Size: 10 to 30 lb
Days to maturity: 75 to 85 days
Delicious, extra-sweet yellow flesh adds a splash of color to fruit salads.
Space 6 feet apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Keep well-watered until maturing stage. Fruit is ripe when it easily breaks from stem.
Red meated (fleahed)
Acoma
Citrullis lanatus. This watermelon is believed to have been grown by the ancient ancestors of Acoma Pueblo. Rounded to slightly elongated fruit with pale to dark green skin. Red-meated.
