Why do people put down New Age beliefs and movements?
Why do people put down "New Agers" and stereotype them? I have seen religious people easily put down New Age beliefs and practices (such as oracles, numerology, crystal/chakra healing, etc...) and atheists attempt to "de-bunk" every little thing they believe and do.
Thing is, most New Agers of all stripes don't seek to convert others, they don't shove their practices and/or beliefs down others throats and not all of them are frauds and charlatans. As someone whose beliefs could be labeled as "New Age", why can people see the validity of religion (or lack of) in a black and white, all or nothing view but think nothing of other ways to interpret and seek God/Higher Power/Divine Source?
Due in February- the same could be said about religion...

I think Sirius hit the nail on the head here. Many "New Age" beliefs are old concepts & beliefs in modern-day packaging.
After all, look at the answer that said new age beliefs are all made up. Look at Dr. Ed's answer, "The whole core base for New Age beliefs, do not have their foundation built in The person of The Lord Jesus Christ"
Take "The Secret" (or the Law of Attraction) for example. I've seen a lot of Christians (and atheists as well) say something like it is all "New Age BS".
Jesus taught that *we reap what we sow* - same concept as the Law of Attraction, so how is this new packaging of an age-old concept against Jesus? "The Secret" and other similar Law of Attraction books, etc. simply take that concept, that belief that Jesus held, and try to teach people how to actively apply that to themselves to better their lives, by bettering their attitudes, which in turn will better their all around mental and physical well-being.
Why people have such an issue with that, I have no idea.
Many ancient cultures used some sort of oracles or divination - read signs from nature, etc. Today, creative expression has been intertwined with such classic divination methods giving birth to some really beautiful tarot and oracle sets.
What we now call "alternative" healing methods have roots from various cultures in original, pre-modern medicine healing methods. And anyone who is worth their weight in salt who practices such methods does not promote them as a complete replacement for proper medical care from one's doctor, but as a helpful supplement to. Exactly how can someone say that this is against Jesus and/or the Bible? If that's the case, then every doctor out there is going against Jesus and the Bible by helping the sick to heal and be well - because those skills are reserved for diving use only, right?
Yes, the bottom line is simply that people tend to fear and ridicule that which they do not understand. IMHO, there's no excuse for ridiculing others due to one's own willful ignorance. But even those of us who feel that way are sometimes guilty of it. We are after all, imperfect humans.
