Physics question about ENERGY?
The chin-up is one exercise that can be used to strengthen the biceps muscle. This muscle can exert a force of approximately 800 N as it contracts a distance of 7.5 cm in a 75-kg male^3. How much work can the biceps muscles (one in each arm) perform in a single contraction? Compare this amount of work with the energy required to lift a 75-kg person 40 cm in performing a chin-up?
The answers to this question are:
Wbiceps=120J
Wchinup=290J
How do you get the answers above? Thanks!!!
Work done = force x distance travelled = 800N x0.075m = 60 J but since you have 2 arms Work = 2 x 60 = 120 J
For a chin up the wiork required to lift a mass m a distance h under gravity is = mgh = 75kg x 9,8 ms^-2 x 0,4m = 294 J = approx 290 J
