Can you use a lathe to carve stone?
I want to get into making 'plugs' for stretched ear lobes, I was wondering if a lathe can carve stone as well as wood?
I would be looking to make plugs like these: http://extremebodyjewelryjax.com/images/JasperPlug.jpg
Yes.
You can use a wood turning lathe.
Will have to make wood extensions for the bits of stone so that live & dead centers will have something to hold onto.
Would dress the ends of the stone flat & glue the ends on w/ hot glue or carpenters glue w/ a piece of glue soaked newspaper in between.
Problem would be the proper tools.
Get the stone blanks as close to cylindrical as possible by grinding, would then set the lathe at slowest speed & rather than turning tools would use rasps or a dremel type rotary agains the stone as it turns or is hand turned ( educated guess)
Once fully rounded can use abrasive paper & pads.
After shaping is complete you can turn up the speed & buff the plugs.
Have used this method to turn plastics that could not take using lathe centers.
Was able to use normal wood turning tools.
Imagine a metal lathe could be set up the same way.
The concave shapes on the plugs shown had to be "turned" somehow.
Best regards
