Grant commanded Union forces but commented on both. He watched as men on both sides fought almost non-stop for two of those days, watching thousands of their brothers fall, climbing over their bodies to advance their positions. He commented that he had never seen spirit like this anywhere else, and that, should the two sides ever put aside their anger and unite, America would be unbeatable.
