Serenity prayer - How do you know what you can and can't control?

Sometimes i find myself going over conversations, for example with boss and thinking of a better way i could have said something - then planning how I'm going to apologize or otherwise remedy the situation.

Would you say the above is 'worrying'? i do it all the time. Or is it problem-solving? i have such a hard time understanding the difference.

People have told me that you cannot control what people think - but when it is something as important as a job, aren't there things we still can control and where do you draw the line? For example, my constant planning to "fix" certain situations at work.....I'm trying to control the impression my boss has....trying to do my job right. So I DO have control, right, even though it is not complete? You can't blow off your job or else you will be fired

So how do you know when to stop obsessing? Is it obsessing or productive problem-solving, since everyone has at least some control of the impression they make. help!

When something consumes all of your time, like obsessive thoughts, the thoughts themselves have control over you, not you over them. Try some cognitive-behavioral methods, like thought changing or writing out your thoughts and breaking them down to see where the actual insecurity is coming from. Other stressors in your life may be carrying over into your work.
