Does reading to your child help them learn to read?
Does reading to your child while they are young help them to learn to read faster when they are older? I try to read to my son at least one story a day but I usually read him more. Will reading to him and getting him involved in story time help him when he is older. He is only 9 months so I know reading is a little ways off. I want to make it easier for him when the time comes but I dont want to do anything like that your baby can read crap.
Yes, it does. It exposes them to letters and words and the way stories work, and language in general. And it teaches them to love books, which is probably MORE important than any actual cognitive advantage they might gain.
(FWIW, I read with my daughter every day when she was young. She didn't end up being a particularly early reader --she started reading independenty at around 5 1/2, but once she DID start reading, she progressed quickly. And that, plus the fact that she lives in a house full of books and has two parents who read voraciously, probably have resulted in the fact that she still reads a lot.)
