is it necessary to have both a wand AND an athame?
i was reading a book on witchcraft, and the athame and the wand seem to both have the same function. do i need both of them, or just whichever one i would rather use?
i was also told by a friend that for a beginner, the only tools that i would really need on an altar would be
athame
chalice
two candles (one white and one black to represent the God and Goddess)
pentagram plate (for lighting incense or candles)
and something the represent each of the 4 elements. (like a feather for Air, for example)
is this good for now, or is there anything else?
No, it is not necessary to have both. Actually, it's not necessary to have either. I have each and they have been little more than decoration for the last few years once I started working more without tools.
I would suggest an athame before a wand though. (Actually, you could make your own wand if and when you want one - they're not that difficult to make whereas making an athame would be more challenging.)
Whatever you can do with a wand you can do with your pointy finger - it's just a focus aid for directing your energy. The athame has more uses - casting and unwinding a circle, cutting a doorway in the circle if you need to exit and re-enter, commonly used as a symbol of the god (when placed in the chalice it is symbolic of the union of god and goddess as is done in some rituals), etc.
Yes, your list is perfect for starting an altar. Add to that an altar cloth (which you may want to be of natural-made material, like cotton). You may eventually find that you want to attune the color of your altar cloth to the particular season, Sabbat, or working you are doing. I have made and bought several different ones over the years. But you can start with whatever you like best.
Note: Your candles could also be silver and gold. Silver, for the goddess which is usually represented by the moon, and gold for the god which is usually represented by the sun.
Whatever you use on your altar should be what best helps you focus and connect with what these items are representing.
A pentagram and a scrying mirror do not an altar make!
