Cardinal Newman says many Catholic traditions are pagan...?
Cardinal Newman admits in his book that; the "temples, incense, oil lamps, votive offerings, holy water, Holidays, and seasons of devotion, processions, blessings of the fields, sacerdotal vestments, the tonsure (of priests, munks and nuns), images, and statues... are all of PAGAN ORIGIN." -The Development of the Christian Religion Cardinal Newman p.359
I can't help but think of this scripture: (Mark 7:6-8) . . .‘This people honor me with [their] lips, but their hearts are far removed from me. 7 It is in vain that they keep worshiping me, because they teach as doctrines commands of men.’ 8 Letting go the commandment of God, YOU hold fast the tradition of men.”
Kudos for his honesty. But then why in God's name would he continue to practice such things?
And why would so many here acknowledge the pagan origin of such things, and continue to include them in their worship? Someone please explain that to me.
What if I said that I wrote a book acknowledging that pedophilia was wrong, but then continued to practice it for many years? Could you ever excuse such behavior?
And for those that think this issue is not critical to their relationship with God, please read and learn Jesus' views on that subject:
Matt 7: 16,17 - By their fruits YOU will recognize them. Never do people gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles, do they? 17 Likewise every good tree produces fine fruit, but every rotten tree produces worthless fruit;
Matt 7: 19-21 - " Every tree not producing fine fruit gets cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Really, then, by their fruits YOU will recognize those [men]. 21 “Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will."
