Help with daughter's geography homework- riddles?
Hi,
My daughter was assigned 30 riddles and we couldn't figure out 1 of them. Any geography wizzes please help!!
1. I'm a long, narrow inlet reaching far inland from the sea. I form in U shaped valleys-glaciers carved the way for me. I form a natural harbor- my sides are long and steep. I'm the most famous one in Norway-my walls are 3,280 feet deep.
We think it is one of Norway's Fjords.
Wow. Talk about an impossible question! Choosing which of the fjords is the most famous is completely subjective!
Here in Norway, I've always heard Geirangerfjord is considered the most famous of the Norwegian fjords. The height of the sides obviously varies, but the highest in Geiranger is 1300 m or 4265 ft.
Geirangerfjord is one of two Norwegian fjords that is listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The second is Nærøyfjord, which is an arm of Sognefjord. Nærøyfjord is probably visited more often than Geirangerfjord, given its convenient location along the popular tourist route between Oslo and Bergen. According to UNESCO, it's sides are 900-1400 m high (2953-4593 ft).

The listing of the height is kind of strange, since the height of the fjord walls vary, and almost all of them are higher than that. Since 3280 ft is almost exactly 1000 m, it sounds like the figure was pulled from an estimate, wherever it came from.
I did a Google search for ["most famous" fjord Norway], and Songefjord and Nærøyfjord do appear more often than Geirangerfjord (both show up). However, Frommer's lists Hardangerfjord and Songefjord as the two most famous and describes Sognefjord as having "sheer, lofty walls rising to more than 1000 m (3280 ft)"

So, although I sorely disagree with it being the "most famous" fjord in Norway, I would go with Sognefjord given that quote, the surprisingly low wall height, and the fact that Nærøyfjord itself is technically part of Sognefjord. I would aslo add a note that Geirangerfjord is also considered the most famous fjord in Norway.
