What was the importance of merchants in the middle ages? How does it influence the modern world?
First of all, they did the obvious: by moving goods around, they created markets and market economies, and this helped lead to more prosperity. But you also have to consider that almost no one traveled much farther than the neighbouring town during the middle ages. Merchants were an exception to this rule. By traveling as far as they did, they connected peoples who otherwise might have not even known about each other, let alone understood each other.
