Can you help me identify this stone?
I purchased a mixed lot of stone beads. The majority were your standard fair, quartz, amethyst, aventurine, etc. However, in the lot was a large red stone. I've never seen anything like it and am having trouble identifying it. The closest guess I can come up with is perhaps coral, but I'm still very unsure. It is about one inch by one inch and has a pretty hefty weight to it. What are your opinions? Links with examples similar to mine would be a BIG help.

These are probably something called "cinnabar" lacquerware beads. I think that in ancient China, these beads were made by mixing powdered cinnabar with lacquer. Cinnabar is the main ore of mercury, and as such is toxic. In modern beads, the material has probably been replaced with dyed plastic. These should be easy to scratch with a steel object (pin, thumbtack, etc) either way.
Alternatively, if the bead is very hard, it could be glazed pottery.
