Newly diagnosed diabetic- just done a blood sugar home test- is a result of 16 dangerous?
My mother has been diagnosed as diabetic, aged 83. The GP told her to reduce her intake of sugar and fats etc and test her blood sugars weekly at home. I've just tried her with a test kit, and it reads 16. Mine is 5.8. We ate the same dinner 2.5 hours ago. I intend redoing it tomorrow before she eats but does anyone know if this sounds dangerous (I am aware it is very high)? Personally I think it is very optimistic that a lady of this age, who is recently widowed, will alter her eating habits enough to impact on glucose levels of this kind. Any advice gratefully received.
Hi there a level of 16 is not to dangerous but it is to high for a long term reading. A bit of advice that may help your mother is to look at the GI index this will give you some idea of how some foods affect the blood glucose level so this will help you decide what foods she can have and may help reduce her levels try to stick with food that is GI low or medium. It is normally better to test the glucose levels before eating as these are a better indicator as levels after food can be affected by a large number of things
